“I responded greatly to her poems.

They are moving and illuminating. Her

work deserves to be recognized.”

Moab. July, 1989

In memory of Cicily Penney Chapin Hills
May 11, 1928 - March 6, 2015,
with whom I made this and other journeys...

The desert has its furniture,
the Book Cliffs, Chimney Rocks,
mesas, Doll House Buttes—
we furnish it with the things we know.
And God is here too, the builder,
through whose canyons like supplicants
we crawl in our '71 Torino.
Will it overheat and leave us to the sun's bald gaze?

In the Professor's Canyon the hippies have their mailboxes
row on row, like tiny cave-dwellings on a post.
And all the roseate cliffs are laughing.
The Anaszazi left their drawings in the blue-black desert varnished rock:
bears, and warrior with spiral shields,
lines of dancing figures holding hands
advancing and receding through time,
and Bob and MaryAnne were here in '75.

To the rocks it's all graffiti
like the poems of Homer mixed in with occasional verse.
The yellow and black highway sign across the road with pointing arrow
reads INDIAN WRITINGS.
We look past it to the rock walls on the other side of the river.
Through the narrow glass tubes of the binoculars
at the mouth of a cave we have discovered,
a white patch of light becomes the blaze
on the face of a single dark brown horse.

Still, as in a trance, no bridle or saddle,
yet clean and shining.
We think the stallion sees our movements—he backs
into the cave and leaves us,
our vision trained on nothing for what seems
like ten whole minutes.
He re-emerges, crops some grass outside the cave.
So perfect. So perfectly alive.
